Free VM's At Oracle Cloud

Yeah, 100 GB block storage in the free tier is nothing to turn your nose up at. Seems good for a Nextcloud instance at least.

EDIT: Granted, specs are one thing, getting it to work is another. Looks like the folks at LET are having a lousy time of things. I’m fine with letting the dust clear before doing much.

They just want you to stick your ‘gender-neutral appendage’ in their hosted database product and get hooked.

Genitals?

OPEN GENITALS!?

It’s just a free service. Stop racking the O in Oracle, or it becomes O’ Rack LE

Is it possible to do OS reinstall without destroying the instance? By destroying the instance public IP is lost and there’s a risk of loosing the free VM (“Out of host capacity” errors).

At most VPS providers you can “just” reinstall the OS and/or change it while keeping the instance itself. As all it usually does is reformat the virtual disk(s).

Right but here in Oracle Cloud there’s no reinstall option. Has anyone tried this?

Could you instead attach an ISO and do it that way? Or a virtual CD ROM? Just like how you would IPMI into a bare metal?

Nope, the only option I can see is to terminate the instance and recreate it.

‘Cloud VMs’ are cattle, not pets.
So, usually no.

The European network (from Zurich) is great

Huh, I signed up for a free account/service.
I made sure to only provision the kind that would stay free, though I had these 30 days of promo credits.
After the 30 days were up, it seems both my account and VM is actually deleted …
So much for free service … I was planning on testing an ARM VM, but nevermind, then … :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I experienced the same thing over a year ago, good to know it’s not just me.

I don’t really like Oracle or their systems, so I’ll just forget about it.
Too bad, as Solaris is pretty nice. :sunglasses:

Odd. I had the oppsite. I just discovered an account I had set up 3 years ago in Germany that was still there. Even though I hadn’t logged in at all in that time. No instances running on it though.

I just setup a UK instance on a new account. So in theory I can now have 4 instances

Still slow boxes, but they are free so :person_shrugging:

Yeah I think there were some issues with new accounts being deleted after the 30 day trial around that time last year. I haven’t heard anything about that issue cropping up in quite a while. But I do keep hearing issues with accounts being deleted when accessed via VPN and, by extension, a data center IP address.
